**The Story of Billy Idol: From “Idle” to Punk Idol**
Billy Idol's legend began in his teens, when a chemistry teacher called him “idle” on his grade sheet. This comment became the inspiration for his stage name, after changing “idle” to “idol,” as the two words sound similar in English.
Born on November 30, 1955 in England, Billy dropped out of college to move to London in 1976 and join the punk movement, influenced by the Sex Pistols. He began his musical career as a guitarist in Chelsea, but soon formed his own band, Generation X, with which he achieved some success.
In 1981, he moved to New York and, with guitarist Steve Stevens, launched his solo career. His first album, *Billy Idol* (1982), was a hit thanks to hits like “Hot in the City,” “Dancing with Myself,” and “White Wedding,” which became popular on MTV.
Although some thought Billy betrayed the punk spirit by becoming a media star, he saw it as an artistic evolution. According to Idol, punk didn’t change the political system, so he continued his career following his heart. And boy did he!
